Graduate Student Showcase

The Graduate Division announces the Graduate Student Showcase, a celebration of our extraordinary graduate students and their remarkable accomplishments. The Showcase includes many opportunities for graduate students to present their work to the broader campus public, and for departments across campus to celebrate and acknowledge the essential contributions of graduate students to the academic mission of UC Santa Barbara.
The 2013 Graduate Student Showcase will include a number of events, from a poster session for graduate students to present their research, to performances, receptions, and social events.

GSACC and San Clemente

Greetings, fellow San Clementers!

It's been a great 2 years as President of our Community Council here in San Clemente! During this time, I have seen the Council grow from a group of unsure but enthusiastic residents who wanted to help their community, to becoming a vibrant and positive presence here, both in fostering an active social scene, as well as amongst other groups at UCSB. I've been able to help organize and fund quite a few events, and work with two wonderful groups of fellow residents in the process. I have met a lot of people along the way, and have made quite a few friends. These past two years have been some of the most fulfilling for me.

I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about some of the things GSACC has done/does for the community. The first is our Resident Generated Event program. During my first year, we were thinking about how to best give GSACC money back to the residents who had paid into it. The idea of partially reimbursing people for their own private events came up. Former GSACC Advisor Joel Thurston and I devised much of the plan. Since Winter 2011, GSACC has been reimbursing various residents' events. This program continues to grow in popularity. The rules and application for reimbursement can be found here: http://ucsbgsacc.blogspot.com/p/events.html. Just remember to submit your form at least a week before the event!

GSACC has also purchased items for community use. The pool table, foosball table, ping-pong table, games for Game Night and of course, the piano in the San Clemente Center were all bought with GSACC funds, and are available for community use.

We have also funded groups created by residents for other residents. The first that comes to mind is San Clemente Voices, a vocal group founded by Emm Simpson, comprised of SCV residents who wanted to sing together. This group is about to resume rehearsals for the Fall 2012 Quarter. Email me at bell.erikj@gmail.com for more information. Other groups will be announced as they are created.

Last year, I was happy to expand GSACC's role in the community beyond the funding of events. As your Community Council, GSACC is the only group within this community that can truly act as your voice concerning life here in SCV. One of our top priorities is to represent your interests to the rest of Housing & Residential Services, and to advocate for any changes within Housing that will positively affect you. If you have any comments, suggestions, praises or complaints about living here, either contact a GSACC Representative or Officer, or ask your RC to put you in touch with someone from GSACC.

I've seen so much happen here in the past two years as President, but alas, my part in this story is coming to a close. I will be passing on the torch very soon. On October 3, shortly after 8pm, the newly nominated Representatives from GSACC will be selecting new Officers from amongst themselves. Even though I will no longer be on GSACC, I hope to be able to serve the interests of this community's residents while I still live here.

-Erik Bell
GSACC President (outgoing)
